About Us

What we do and where it all began.

Fulford Show is an opportunity for the village to come together and celebrate the community that is Fulford: its history, character and achievements. The Show spreads across two sites: the Fulford Social Hall and School Lane playing field. In the Social Hall are the exhibits. On the playing field are stalls, advertising local voluntary and charity groups and selling locally made goods. There is also entertainment, food, and sports.

The Autumn Show started in Fulford in 1862 to celebrate Feast Day (May 1st). By 1868 it had become known as the May Show which was held each year on the 1st and 2nd of May when it was traditional to serve gooseberry tart as a special dish.

The earliest reference we have of the Fulford Show is from a schedule in 1903 (but it likely had this name for some time before!). The 1903 Schedule listed 15 Vice-Presidents, 30 Committee Members and 2 Secretaries. There were competition classes for plants, cut flowers, fruit, vegetables, bread, butter, eggs, poultry, pigeons, rabbits and horses. There were also sportive competitions including a “Leaping Competition” and “A Hack Ridden By A Lady”.

Today, the Fulford Show is kept alive by a small group of volunteers who meet monthly from March to prepare it all. We are a not-for-profit organisation that gives back to local charities. If you’d be interested in volunteering please contact us – there are lots of ways you can help either on the committee or even just on the day itself.
